Cooking shows have slowly been taking over. From shows like “Chopped” to “Restaurant Impossible” it would appear that we are currently having a love affair with chefs, cooking and epicurean delights. I myself like watching “The Next Food Network Star” and “Restaurant Impossible.” Perhaps that is because growing up, my parents owned a couple of restaurants, and I began working my way up from sweeping the parking lot to cooking for them. This last year I have taken some great cooking classes at P.C.C Markets and Whole Foods that have been fun, inspiring and fascinating. So tonight enjoy some great quotes about cooking. From funny to profound, the preparation of food can truly be a spiritual experience.

“The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you’ve got to have a what-the-hell attitude.” ~ Julia Child

“No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.” ~ Laurie Colwin

“if god had intended us to follow recipes, He wouldn’t have given us grandmothers.” ~ Linda Henley

Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.  ~Voltaire

“Breadbaking is one of those almost hypnotic businesses, like a dance from some ancient ceremony. It leaves you filled with one of the world’s sweetest smells… there is no chiropractic treatment, no Yoga exercise, no hour of meditation in a music-throbbing chapel, that will leave you emptier of bad thoughts than this homely ceremony of making bread.” ~M.F.K. Fisher

“Cooking is a once child’s play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love.”
                                                                                                           ~Craig Claiborne

“Fish, to taste right, must swim three times–in water, in butter and in wine.” ~Polish Proverb

“Some people like to paint pictures, or do gardening, or build a boat in the basement. Other people get a tremendous pleasure out of the kitchen, because cooking is just as creative and imaginative an activity as drawing, or wood carving, or music.”  ~Julia Child

“Cooking is an art and patience a virtue… Careful shopping, fresh ingredients and an unhurried approach are nearly all you need. There is one more thing – love. Love for food and love for those you invite to your table. With a combination of these things you can be an artist – not perhaps in the representational style of a Dutch master, but rather more like Gauguin, the naïve, or Van Gogh, the impressionist. Plates or pictures of sunshine taste of happiness and love.”  ~Keith Floyd

“Cooking should be a carefully balanced reflection of all the good things of the earth.”
                                                                                        ~Jean & Pierre Troisgros

“What garlic is to food, insanity is to art.”   ~Anonymous

“To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”  ~Revelation 2:7
